Inhale & Exhale: A Community Portrait
2019
Video

Within this project, I along with my collaborator Derek “Focus” Smith question the method or process of creating community, foster relationships, and being authentic to your identity. Specifically, this installation explores shared movements and gesture as a means for healing, building cross-cultural relationships, and critiquing existing local social practices and norms. Inhale & Exhale - A Community Portrait positions the collective embodied actions of the performers as a visual language that intentionally and intimately intervenes and responds to the questions, what is a community?, and how well do you know your community? The performers shared actions combined with interviews, spoken poetry, and text acknowledges the bodily and emotional tensions created by individual identities and presents new shared gestures that disrupt the existing language model. The video is a visual representation of a shared movement-based practice that critiques current cultural practices and provides a physical and visual example of creating a new path and questioning what a community is, and one’s role within the community.
