Eum & Yang: Balance of Opposites is a performance by artist Naomi Even-Aberle and her partner Nikolas Aberle, performed in Rapid City, South Dakota in 2017. The performance utilizes Even-Aberle's visually painted body as a way to illustrate the Korean martial arts philosophy of Eum & Yang (balance of opposites). By taking the martial arts technique of falling in place (blue), and randomized falling (red) the visual impact of the painted body on the canvas, displays the inaccuracies and impossibility of perfection. Calling into question the goal of perfection ingrained within the martial arts body, and philosophy of achieving this perfection. Even-Aberle is looking at the artist's body as a secondary canvas, one that illustrates physical actions, and the relationship between philosophical approaches. The mixing of the colors exemplifies the mixing of training approaches, but also the mixing of two cultures: Korean and American.
