Eum & Yang: Balance of Opposites
2017
Performance Video
Eum & Yang: Balance of Opposites is a live performance and video recreation by artist Naomi Even-Aberle and her partner Nikolas Aberle, performed in Rapid City, South Dakota in 2017. The performance utilizes Even-Aberle's visually painted body as a way to illustrate the Korean martial arts philosophy of Eum & Yang (balance of opposites). By taking the martial arts technique of falling in place (blue), and randomized falling (red) the visual impact of the painted body on the canvas, displays the inaccuracies and impossibility of perfection. Calling into question the goal of perfection ingrained within the martial arts body, and philosophy of achieving this perfection.
