Breaking Point
2018
Performance
Breaking Point is a live performance by artist Naomi Even-Aberle, assistants Kevin Gilmore and Tom Jessen, performed at the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA Visual Art Winter Residency in Montpelier Vermont in 2018. For the performance Even-Aberle reached out to successful female artists, curators, writers, and women in leadership positions; and requested any sexist phrases or comments they had ever encountered or heard. These phrases were then written by hand onto the boards for the performance. Speaking the phrases out loud, Even-Aberle was able to embody the sexism in the moment, but also to take direct physical action against the phrases, by utilizing her hands to break through the board. Demonstrating that there is a physical and emotional breaking point.
